And is this reputation justified? In this article I address some key questions about palm oil production: how has it changed; where is it grown; and how this has affected deforestation and biodiversity. The story of palm oil is not as simple as it is often portrayed. Global demand for vegetable oils has increased rapidly over the last 50 years.
Oil palm crops globally produce an annual 81 million tonnes (Mt) of oil from about 19 million hectares (Mha). In contrast, the second and third largest vegetable oil crops, soybean and rapeseed, yield a combined 84 Mt oil but occupy over 163 Mha of increasingly scarce arable land. The oil palm crop system faces many challenges in the 2020s.
How the palm oil industry is transitioning to net-zero - The World Economic Forum
Agriculture, Food and Beverage Palm oil is often associated with deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, but with global demand for vegetable oil growing, it could be a sustainable solution. Cultivating palm oil brings a high yield, with relatively little disruption to indigenous species compared to other oil crops such as rapeseed and soy.

Petroleum industry in Canada
Petroleum production in Canada is a major industry which is important to the overall economy of North America. Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world and is the world's fourth largest oil producer and fourth largest oil exporter. In 2019 it produced an average of 750,000 cubic metres per day (4.7 Mbbl/d) of crude oil and equivalent.
How RSPO helps. At the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), we have a simple aim: a sustainable palm oil industry. We’re transforming the sector by bringing together stakeholders across the supply chain to develop and implement global standards for producing and sourcing certified sustainable palm oil.
