Zero-Waste Technologies for the Sustainable Development of Oil Palm Mills
First Online: 05 November 2022 195 Accesses Abstract Wastes generated from oil palm processing can be potentially utilised for the production of renewable energy and organic fertilisers, as well as the recovery of used water. This chapter describes a research programme that adopted a sustainable approach.
Alternatively, fast pyrolysis of oil palm biomass is also recommended to liquefy oil palm biomass and harvest the energy-dense pyrolysis oil/bio-oil. Since bio-oil is an exciting mix of compounds (e.g. aromatics and polyaromatics, carboxylic acids, and so forth), it can be further processed as a renewable and sustainable chemical source ( Ali et al., 2015 ).
Microwave physicochemical activation: an advanced approach
The rapid growth in the oil palm industry resulted in a huge amount of oil palm waste, including empty fruit bunches (EFBs), palm kernel shells, mesocarp fibres, and palm oil mill effluent (POME) . Typically, one tone of fresh fruit bunch contains 23% EFB, 21% crude palm oil, 14% mesocarp fibre, 7% palm kernel shell, and 6% palm kernel cake [ 2 ].
An enhanced utilization of solid and liquid wastes from palm oil milling processes for power generation is proposed and evaluated. The proposed system consists of EFB gasification, POME digestion, and additional ORC modules. A cogeneration system, producing both electricity and heat, produces syngas and biogas from both modules.
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) Production from Palm Oil Mill
HVO technology can accommodate multi-feedstocks coming from various sources with different qualities, like UCO, tall oil and fats, as well as palm oil mill effluents (POME) – the liquid waste stream disposed from palm oil mills. 4 Hydro-treated vegetable oil derived from POME oil, i.e. the oil content in POME, could be particularly ...
Palm oil is one of the leading agricultural crops in the world, as it dominates 34% of the global vegetable oil market, with approximately 64.6*103 million kgs of production in 2017.
Changes in the microbiota during biological treatment of palm oil mill
Biological treatment of palm oil mill waste. Palm oil mill biomass is commonly processed by biological treatment under aerobic or anaerobic conditions (Hassan and Abd-Aziz, 2012; Onoja et al., 2019). Previous literature provided comprehensive reviews and information based on the palm oil mill's final by-products and polishing biological ...
Abstract Palm oil mill effluent (POME) contains high amount of organic contents and residual oil associated with many environmental concerns related due to discharge of untreated POME. POME is a highly polluting effluent that demands appropriate handling before it can be disposed to the water bodies. POME treatment is a significant concern in palm oil mills and the treatment technique has ...
Hybrid Approach for Optimisation and Analysis of Palm Oil Mill
A palm oil mill produces crude palm oil, crude palm kernel oil and other biomass from fresh fruit bunches. Although the milling process is well established in the industry, insufficient research and development reported in optimising and analysing the operations of a palm oil mill.
The largest producers globally are Indonesia and Malaysia, followed by Thailand, Colombia, and Nigeria. About 80% of the world's palm oil supply comes from Indonesia and Malaysia together (MacArthur et al., 2021). Malaysia produces up to 18.5 million MT of crude palm oil (CPO) in marketing year of 2021/22.
